Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Mirabai Chanu won India’s first silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event

 Mirabai Chanu won India's first medal at the Tokyo Olympics and won the silver medal in women's weightlifting under 49 kg.   


The Indian lifted 202 kilograms, second only to the Chinese Hou Zhihai, who won the gold medal with an Olympic record of 210 kilograms.

Mirabai is the second Indian to win an Olympic weightlifting medal after Karnam Malleswari won the historic bronze medal in 1998, and the fifth to win a silver medal in a singles event.  The world's third racket started with a successful snatch of 84 kg and 87 kg. This was a good start for them to chase the podium. However, the 26-year-old athlete failed on his third attempt to raise the weight to 89 kg.

As the world record holder for the women's 49 kg clean and jerk, Mirabe was in a good position on the podium after finishing first after the start, and Mirabe did not disappoint. In 2021, he broke the 200 kg mark in the Asian Championships."I don't want to win a silver medal in the Olympics, I want a gold medal," she said in April this year.
