Massive explosion in the port of Dubai Jebel Ali triggers a major fire, no reported casualties

Dubai - A large explosion struck Dubai's Jebel Ali port just before midnight on Wednesday (July 7, 2021), triggering a large cloud of flames and a shock wave that shook the windows of buildings several kilometers away.

According to initial reports, however, there were no fatalities. The explosion occurred on a small ship in the port of Jebel Ali.

Dubai Police in Chief Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri said: "The fire in the port of Jebel Ali broke out on board a small container ship. No casualties were reported."

Dubai Civil Defense Director Major General Rashid Thani Al Matrooshi told the Dubai Media Office that about two and a half hours after the incident, the fire had been fully brought under control and the cooling process had begun.

An official told a local TV station that the crew managed to evacuate in time before the fire exploded one of the containers, but the type of material in the container is currently unknown.

Indian expat Vishal Bathija, who lives relatively closer to the port of Jebel Ali, was watching the England-Denmark match when the explosion occurred.

“My TV room faces the harbor. The sound was very loud and made our windows rattle, ”says the 49-year-old from Mumbai.

Another Indian expat, Madhuri Bhandari, said she heard the explosion in the Dubai Mall nearly 35 kilometers away, despite a rather crowded atmosphere in the mall.   Jebel Ali is one of the largest ports in the world in the far north of the city.
