COvid 19

After a record-breaking Covid-19 vaccination on Monday, with around 8.8 million doses, India on Tuesday vaccinated nearly 52.8 lakh people, raising questions on whether such large daily vacciantion could be sustained.According to the centre, Monday’s increase wasn’t a sudden development but the result of coordinated planning with states and improved supplies of vaccines. The trouble appeared with the allegations that some states, including Madhya Pradesh, had hoarded vaccine doses for days to achieve 'Magic Monday'. Of the top 10 states which administered the most doses, seven happen to have BJP governments.
In a either way, Madhya Pradesh truly emerged as the protagonist of the blockbuster vaccination day on Monday — recording over 16 lakh vaccinations. The Indore district alone recorded nearly 2.2 lakh vaccinations, nearly triple the number recorded by Delhi. The centre exuded confidence that with an increase in vaccine production and a better advance schedule of supplies, the number is expected to remain high. It also added that the participation of private sector would improve vaccination rates, a report in Times of India said.
In order to accomplish the central government's goal of vaccinating all the adult members of the nation, 97 lakh vaccinations need to be carried out per day. The current supply situation raises questions on whether the target will be met. In contrast to this, the government does claims to possess the capacity to store and administer the daily required number of vaccines.
The Chairman of NTAGI (National Advisory Group on Immunisation),Dr NK Arora, said, "The government aims to vaccinate 1 crore people each day. And we have the capacity of stocking 1.25 crore doses each day". Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said the centre is fully cooperating with the states in this matter. "We have been giving advanced visibility to state. Quoting Mr Bhushan, "We tell them how much doses you will get in next 15 days. So states can plan better."
But the gaps in supply became starkly visible in Madhya Pradesh. The state that reported administering a record 17 lakh doses, could give less than 5,000 shots on Tuesday till 6.30 pm. The run-up to Monday's record, Madhya Pradesh had cut back drastically on daily vaccinations, hitting a low of just 4,000 doses the day before. From 37,904 on June 15, the number of jabs dropped to 4,098 on June 20. On June 21, the state recorded 16,95,592 vaccine doses administered. The state government has however denied hoarding to ensure a big spike.
"There is no such issue of hoarding vaccines," said state Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang. "There may have been some data entry issues that are reflecting lower numbers earlier. All our vaccinations on Monday were done before your eyes. There is nothing to hide. I am shocked by the kind of questions you are asking," he added.
Also a matter of pride and a little shimmer of sunshine on a dark day, Uttar Pradesh is one of the few states that surpassed its record of 6 lakh doses on Monday by vaccinating more than 7 lakh people on Tuesday.
Also shockingly, The Delta plus variant, a new mutant version of the Delta strain first detected in India, has been found in three states in the country. Twenty-one cases of the ‘Delta plus’ variant, considered highly infectious, have been reported in Maharashtra threatening to massively dent the state’s fight against the virus as experts warn that this variant may trigger a third wave of the pandemic in the state. People are now fearful on the onset of the third wave of Covid, reminiscing the damage inflicted upon the general public by the deadly virus.
